Chinese Paper Flower

Origami

Flowers are how plants make more plants. Many flowers
need bees to spread pollen, so they must be attractive. People also love
flowers, and being a person, so do I. This paper flower model is a classic
chinese origami pattern, and has a marvelous locking trick that is quite
elegant. Learning to fold the paper flower introduces some essential folds,
like the inside squash and inside mountain folds.

As usual, your choice of paper is key. Using shiny yellow paper you
can make christmas bells. For blue bells, use a thin sky blue paper, and
for a tiger lily, I used tiger print.

The origami flower begins with a bird base,
which is two diagonal valley folds and two bisecting mountain
folds.

Squash fold the right (or left if you like)
flap. Begin by valley folding the flap in half, so that the right edge
lines up with the center. Crease the fold well, and unfold.

Open the right flap with you finger, so that
the right edge rises above the center of the model.

Flatten (or squash as the name suggests) the
flap so that it creates an upside down triangle.

Valley fold two diagonal creases on the top
layer only, from the center of the bottom edge of that triangle (the top
layer), at a 45 degree angle to the bottom third of the edges of the
triangle (the spot that lines up with the left and right points). Crease
the folds well, and unfold.

Valley fold the top two layers twice, from
bottom point of the model to the left and right edges of the top triangle,
where they line up with the left and right points of the
model.

Reverse squash fold the lower half of the top
two layers along these four folds.

To reverse squash the folds, open the top
triangle up, and fold the bottom corner of the triangle
inside.

Once both sides are in position, the top layer
will come to a point at the bottom, and the left and right edges of the
second layer will line up with the vertical center crease.

Flatten the top layer into a crystal shape,
completing the inside squash fold (congratulations).

Valley fold the two points up to the left and
right points on the top crystal shape, along the edge of the top layer.
Crease well.

Inside mountain fold the left and right bottom
halfs of the top layer.

The inside mountain fold involves opening the
model just a little, and tucking the flaps underneath.

Form the fold, making sure that the edges line
up on the inside of the model.

Once the flaps are in position, flatten the
model again and crease very well.

One side complete, turn the model
over.

Valley fold the right (or left if you liked)
flap in half, to mark the squash fold, just as you did on the other side.
Crease well and unfold.

Open the right flap, and squash fold it over
the center of the model.

Prepare the valley folds, and inside squash
fold the top layers, just as you did before.

Like the other side, valley fold the two
points to the points of the diamond, along the edges. Crease
well.

Inside mountain fold the left and right bottom
halfs of the lower layer, crease well, and you are done folding.

To lock the flower into position, press gently
on the left and right sides, opening the center.

Position the four flaps on the inside so that
they line up and hold each other in. This is where the pollen is
kept.

The fun lock on this flower is achieved by
curling the pedals outwards. Put a thumb at the end of a pedal, and push in
with your finger just below the tip. The pedal will pop inside out, and
lock into place.

Curl the rest of the pedals.

The pressure between the curled pedals and the
stymen pressing together keep this model in shape. An impressive example of
ancient chinese wisdom.
